Health Privacy Expertise Added to Baker & Daniels' Health Care & Life Sciences

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Richard M. Campanelli has joined Baker & Daniels LLP as counsel in the law firm's health care and life sciences practices. He also will serve as a senior advisor with B&D; Consulting, an advisory and advocacy division of Baker & Daniels.

Campanelli brings extensive experience in government and private sector matters. He worked with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) from 2002-09, first as Director of the Office for Civil Rights and then as Counselor to the Secretary on the HHS senior management team.

Campanelli advised the HHS Secretary and worked closely with senior career officials at HHS and other executive branch agencies, including the Office of Management & Budget and the White House, on matters arising from the four public health divisions — the Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. As Director of the Office for Civil Rights at HHS, he led the office's nationwide medical privacy and civil rights compliance efforts in 10 regional offices and Washington, D.C.

Prior to joining HHS, Campanelli counseled senior management and boards, including nonprofit organizations, on compliance and development of strategies for more than 13 years in private law practice.

Campanelli graduated from the University of Virginia with a law degree and a bachelor's degree in economics. He has taught nonprofit law, governance and ethics at the graduate level. Before entering law school, he served as Senior Special Assistant to the U.S. Attorney General and led a nonprofit organization that mentored troubled teenagers.
