Ralph Hall Testifies at Congressional Hearing on Medical Device Safety

WASHINGTON — Ralph Hall, an advisor with B&D; Consulting and distinguished professor and practitioner at the University of Minnesota Law School, testified on February 17, 2011, before the U.S. House of Representatives' Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Health.

The Congressional hearing, titled "Impact of Medical Device Regulation on Jobs and Patients," focused on medical device issues, including the 510(k) system and the Food & Drug Administration's (FDA) impact on innovation and jobs. Specifically, the committee requested that Hall describe the conclusions of a study he recently conducted evaluating the safety of 510(k) medical devices approved or cleared through the FDA's regulatory system.

Hall's study was conducted on behalf of the University of Minnesota Law School and received funding for the study through the private, nonpartisan Kauffman Foundation. It is being prepared for publication in a major peer-reviewed journal.

The Committee on Energy & Commerce is one of the oldest standing committees of the U.S. House of Representatives. Today, it maintains principal responsibility for legislative oversight relating to telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, public health, air quality and environmental health, the supply and delivery of energy, and interstate and foreign commerce in general.
