In response, Mary Bono of FaegreBD Consulting, a spokesperson for the Coalition for Consumer and Online Protection, spoke out about the risks of banning online gambling.
"Banning all online gaming nationwide, as this bill effectively does, would put American consumers at serious risk," Bono said in a statement published by Politico and several other news sources. "It is impossible to stand in the way of the Internet; instead, we should embrace and shape these new technologies in a way that is safe for consumers."
"There isn't any question whether Americans are gaming online. They are," Bono noted in the Salt Lake Tribune. "Congress should be focused on keeping them safe, not shutting down existing consumer protections. If Congress passes this bill, we'll see more Americans gaming on black market websites with absolutely no protections against fraud, identity theft and other criminal activity."
