In the wake of several high-profile cyber-attacks in the U.S., President Obama has announced increased regulations on companies exposed to data breaches. National chains have largely applauded the move as they can now focus on a single national standard of rules.

During her tenure in Congress, senior vice president at FaegreBD Consulting, Mary Bono served on the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet. Bono told the National Journal that businesses effected by data breaches will benefit from the new regulations as they can focus efforts on damage control after a breach rather than spending time navigating regulations on state-by-state basis.

"When a business is faced with a breach, it's a far better use of its time and resources to focus on mitigating the impact of the breach rather than navigating 47 different state notification laws," said Bono in the National Journal.
