In the wake of several high-profile cyber-attacks in the U.S., President Obama has announced a need for nationalized regulations on companies exposed to data breaches. Business leaders largely support such legislation as they could focus on a single national standard of regulations rather than navigating state-by-state rules in the event of a data breach.
During her tenure in Congress, senior vice president at FaegreBD Consulting, Mary Bono served on the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet. She also helped author the "Personal Data Notification and Protection Act," which would require companies to notify customers if a breach compromises personal information, a cornerstone of the suggested legislation announced by the president.
Bono authored an article for The Hill in which she explained that the costs to consumers, businesses and the government are too high to ignore the threat of such criminal activities.
