The federal government appears to be making a concerted effort to secure the border—against prescription drugs sold by online pharmacies based in Canada. Recently unsealed federal indictments have charged CanadaDrugs.com and many associated entities with conspiracy to smuggle prescription drugs into the U.S. The indictments also allege that some of the drugs were mislabeled, improperly handled or unapproved under U.S. regulations. In a CNBC.com piece on the topic, Libby Baney, Faegre Baker Daniels counsel, senior director for FaegreBD Consulting, and founder and executive director of the Alliance for Safe Online  Pharmacies (ASOP), said the indictments shed light on the potential dangers of these online vendors.

"For years, millions of patients and physicians have relied upon PharmacyChecker.com and CanadaDrugs.com believing they are getting genuine drugs from a real Canadian pharmacy," Baney said. "The [Justice Department] indictment evidences that these entities have been touting myths, giving U.S. physicians and consumers a false—and consequently dangerous—sense of confidence."
