Venture Philanthropy

FaegreBD Consulting supports the capital needs of early stage, life science companies through collaboration with public and nonprofit sectors — and sometimes in concert with commercial interests. Working with current and emerging initiatives, our professionals identify and collaborate with investment vehicles guided by nonprofit organizations with at least a partial focus on early stage companies.

Our work takes many forms depending on the nature of our clients' needs. For example, we leverage mechanisms within states — which vary from state to state — to fund venture philanthropy efforts that demonstrate return on investment at the local level. We also work with academic institutes, nonprofit entities and hybrid organizations to drive funding at the national, state and regional levels.

Advancing 21st Century Science Funding

With increased venture philanthropy activity across the country — especially among disease specific and more broadly based research advocacy organizations — there is now a rich array of new funding collaborations and models to help advance 21st century science. Our research and work experience suggest a number of broader trends and factors among the government and non-traditional funding sources for early stage, life science companies as well. The recession certainly took its toll on government and nonprofit programs alike, but many funding mechanisms in place throughout the sluggish economy continue to exist and a number are growing again.

Our professionals also help government-driven initiatives withstand the winds of political change by reshaping programs to align with the current priorities of the administration and Congress. Furthermore, when funding sources shift or expand their focus from activity based in an academic setting to early stage companies, we help clients adapt to a different set of performance expectations.
