Technology Transfer & Commercialization

Through the firm's integrated higher education and technology-based economic development practices, FaegreBD Consulting has significant experience building and enhancing technology transfer and commercialization programs, as well as advocating on related policy initiatives. Our team works with research and technology agencies of the federal government such as the Agricultural Research Service, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

FaegreBD Consulting's team has experience in developing and implementing tech transfer funding programs, including proof of concept programs at the university level, supporting entrepreneurs commercializing technology from federal labs and university research institutions, and establishing corporate partnerships for seed-stage investment. These programs have been designed around grants from state and federal government, corporate support, and leveraging equity investment.

The firm was directly involved in aspects of the development of Start-Up America and development of federal technology commercialization policy, including providing staff support to a member of the Department of Commerce's Innovation Advisory Board.

An example of FaegreBD Consulting's technology transfer work is summarized below.

  • Agricultural Research. Working on behalf of three tech-based economic development clients and in direct coordination with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Technology Transfer, FaegreBD Consulting helped design, build, and launch the Agricultural Technology Innovation Partnership (ATIP).

ATIP is a partnership intermediary network – one of only two established within the federal government. ATIP consists of nine partner institutions, of which eight are serving as technology transfer portals located within an ARS region. The eight tech-based economic development ATIP partners include the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO); Mississippi Technology Alliance (MTA); Wisconsin Security Research Consortium (WSRC) in cooperation with the Center for Innovative Food Technologies (CIFT) based in Toledo; Georgia Research Alliance (GRA); Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority (BFTDA); Kansas Bioscience Authority (KBA); TechComm (Center for Innovation) at Arlington, TX; and the California Association for Local Economic Development (CALED).  The National Association of Seed and Venture Funds is also a member of the ATIP Network.

ATIP was established to provide opportunities for the private sector to commercialize research outcomes arising from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's vast research & development portfolio.  To develop, enhance, and strengthen these commercialization opportunities, the ATIP Network coordinates technology "showcases," provides private sector ARS partners with access to business mentors and, among myriad other activities, works to attract seed and venture fund investment.
